The importance of Personal Protective Equipment

With more than 14 years of experience in Occupational Health, Working Knowledge International has seen first hand the importance of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Risk Management in the workplace.

The purpose of PPE is to reduces the risk of injury or harm to employees who may be exposed to hazards in the workplace. HSE’s website states that “measures to make the workplace safe include the provision of instructions, procedures, training and supervision to encourage people to work safely and responsibly.”

However, these measures alone; when applied, do not always guarantee employees’ safety from injury or harm as hazards may still remain in the workplace; PPE is therefore used as a last resort to ensure the health and safety of the employee.

As per the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1993 (Act No. 85 of 1993) the onus is on the Employer to supply PPE to their employees: “The employer shall take steps to reduce the risk as much as is practicable, and shall provide free of charge and maintain in a good and clean condition such safety equipment and facilities as may be necessary to ensure that any person exposed to any such condition or situation at a workplace or in the course of his employment or on premises where machinery is used is rendered safe.”
